Highlights of the year from June – December

Welcome to the second part of our year.

At the start of June we celebrated the opening of our new Orangery, and combined this with a large village party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. The Orangery has spent the rest of the year being used for parties, weddings, dinners, christenings, afternoon teas and Sunday lunches. For a fantastic New Year party, guests danced the night away in the Orangery, whilst the giant hidden 5m cinema projected Big Ben and the London fireworks at midnight. All just how we hoped it would be.

At our June opening Mark Oglesby, welcomed everyone on the steps of the balustrade after which Nigel Adams MP was invited to cut the ribbon to open the Orangery. Other guests included the Mayor and Mayoress of Knaresborough, Emmerdale star John Bowe and BBC Radio York’s Georgie Spanswick.

The beautiful cake, created specially for us by Blossom Tree Cake Company was a wonder to behold and certainly fit for a queen!

Guests were served gorgeous canapes from our head chef, Nyetimber gave everyone a taste of the British summer with their award winning English sparkling wine and everyone was royally entertained by The Event Music Company.

And to top off a wonderful month we hosted lots of beautiful weddings – including Emily & Ben and Ashleigh & Elliott. My thanks to Chris Milner Photography and Katie McMillan for these gorgeous black and white images.

#Weddinghour live

At the end of the month we hosted a party for those in the wedding profession to introduce the new Orangery. #weddinghour was invented by Lisa Hogg of The Wedding Affair for wedding people to get together on Twitter for an hour on Wednesdays from 9 to 10pm. Lisa also organised our #weddinghourlive – a party centred around this magical wedding hour!

Lots of wedding people partied while entertainment was provided by from Miss Deal Casinos, a magic mirror from Photo Booth Hire UK and music from The Event Music Company.

Hitched is one of the must-go-to websites for brides and it was such a real honour to be included in its list of Top 23 most beautiful bridal suites in the UK. They said that we had a ‘classically decorated bedroom’ which was ‘perfect if you want to start your married life in a refined setting’.

‘Stay in the carved wood four poster bed, complete with floral drapes, at Goldsborough Hall and you’ll feel like royalty.’ How kind!

It’s such an honour for us to host the most important day of people’s lives and we count ourselves lucky to work with fabulous people. It is a pleasure to reproduce here just a snapshot of the wonderful weddings that we had this month.

My thanks to Blossom Tree Cake Company and Jamie Sia Photography (far right), to Chris Milner Photography for capturing our first Orangery wedding, and to The Twins Photography  for their lovely image of this new space, and to Photogenick and KL Photography who took advantage of our Union Flag cut into the lawn to photograph their wedding couple.

The end of the month saw us once again opening the gardens to the National Garden Scheme. It was a mixed bag weather wise but several hundred people ventured out. Our next Summer opening is Sunday 23rd July 2017 12-5pm.

The NGS opening was the first time that the public could see the replacement sundial head, re-made for the historic Grade II listed sundial. The 19th century sundial was missing its original head, owner Mark Oglesby, spent many years researching the original before having the new head specially made, as an exact replica of the original C W Dixey of London. On a sunny day it is to such detail and accuracy that you could almost set your watch from it.

The height of the summer! The Orangery was in use again for the wedding of Becki and Joe – look at the size of those amazing flowers!

We were also hosts to our very good friends Radley of London. This time they held their fair in the new Orangery and made use also of our two new private dining rooms adjacent to the Orangery. It’s great to wander around looking at all their next season’s products – sadly for us ladies – it’s trade only!

Wine & Dine evening with Louis Latour

September’s wine dinner was held for the first time in the Orangery, hosted by Goldsborough Hall and in conjunction with Bon Coeur Fine Wines.  Janet Guest from Louis Latour gave our guests a splendid introduction to their wines. Goldsborough Hall chefs cooked up a storm with a starter of smoked mackerel parfait, horseradish mousse & pickled cucumber with a main of roast rump of lamb, potato & lamb gratin, heritage carrots, broad beans & rosemary jus. Thanks to Blue Orange Flowers for the gorgeous centrepiece arrangements.

Next wine dinner: Wine & Dine Evening: Berton Vineyards, Australia on Thursday 26th January 2017, 7pm

This month we were delighted to receive a Highly Commended in the Yorkshire Life Food & Drink awards for 2016 which was held at a very smart lunch at Rudding Park. We were up against giants such as Swinton Park and West Park Harrogate so we were thrilled to be in the final three! Maybe next year…. Pictured are James McDonnell, General Manager and Mark Oglesby, owner.

I couldn’t resist showing this fabulous black & white photograph from Lucy & James’s wedding taken by Cris Matthews – such a great shot.

More celebrations this month with our 11th anniversary of being at the hall. We have certainly come a long way since 2005 (pictured below with all the creeper), turning a derelict building into a ‘stately stay’ and one of Yorkshire’s premier wedding venues. Catherine Scott from the Yorkshire Post magazine wrote a lovely article telling the story of our 11-year journey.

We held our Wedding Open Afternoon in October, setting out the Orangery as a wedding with flowers by The Flower Shed. There was lots of interest in this new space for 2017! Our next open afternoon is Sunday 22nd January 2017 1-4pm.

Autumn afternoon tea at the hall – always proves very popular if matched with a glass of fizz. Afternoon tea is available everyday and pre-booking is essential.

We were delighted to host Belle Bridal magazine for a photo shoot earlier in the summer and we were included in a 7-page feature with images from the garden and inside the new Orangery.

As Autumn drew in, just look at this incredible shot of Sarah & Matthew so well captured by Richard Wynn Davies‘ lens.

Out in the garden, we began the massive task of clearing all the leaves – a job that goes on, and on and on…

But we were hampered by some unusual weather! Still the garden looked so pretty with its dusting of snow, even if it was November!

In November, we married a Cheeky Girl! Monica and Shaun had the most fabulous day. Did they dance to the Cheeky Girls songs? I’m not saying! Great shot of them thanks to Lee Call Photography.

As the weather turned frosty, it was time for comfort food and lunch in the Orangery is served! BBQ short rib of beef, crispy onions, celeriac & beetroot slaw, dill picked courgette & skinny fries. The Orangery at Goldsborough Hall is open daily, tel 01423 867321 to book.

It’s always such a busy time of year. We were once again treated to a wonderful carol concert by Highfield School, part of HLC, they raised over £700 for Autism Angels. We also hosted local lingerie shop Sheer Bliss for a Festive Nightwear photo shoot.

We held lots of weddings in December with our brides and grooms taking advantage of the Hall looking so pretty with its Christmas decorations. As the weather was pretty mild, many couples managed pictures outside including this lovely shot of Joel and Natalie by Lee Call Photography.

Finally it’s time to put our feet up! From all of us at Goldsborough Hall, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
