Six Reasons to visit the Hall in Autumn
‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ - John Keats
Who doesn’t enjoy watching the leaves changing into multi-coloured works of art, gasping in wonder at the rich ambers and yellows of the late-summer flowers and tasting harvest produce fresh from the kitchen garden?
There are so many reasons why I love autumn! It isn’t all about natural endings, but about new beginnings… the shedding of this year’s life and the preparation for the next. It’s time to renew and refresh our outlook.
Where better to enjoy an autumn country-house break than at Goldsborough Hall in North Yorkshire? Here’s six reasons to embrace the changing season:
‘It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!’ - Pooh’s Grand Adventure
1. Autumn Gardens at the Hall
Embrace the colours of nature. The gardens and woodlands of Goldsborough Hall transform into a riot of yellows, reds and oranges from September to November. The Woodland Walk and Lime Tree Walk trees turn to rust, burnt orange & red; while the main borders blaze with yellow, bronze and amber. Even the Hall itself reflects the autumn changes, turning its Boston Ivy creeper from a glossy green to stunning scarlet. It is truly the best time of year to admire and photograph the landscape.
‘Autumn… the year’s last, loveliest smile’ William Cullen Bryant
2. Autumn walks
There’s no better time to go for a walk than on a crisp autumn day. Wrap up warm and breathe in the fresh air. Crunch the leaves under foot and catch leaves falling from the trees in the Lime Tree Walk. The 12 acres of Goldsborough Hall’s gardens and grounds are perfect for an autumnal stroll.
Maybe take a walk round the picturesque village of Goldsborough. RHS Harlow Carr is just a short drive away - and it’s brimming with autumn colour at this time of year. Perhaps a trip to the nearby Dales or Moors? The possibilities are endless!
‘There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky’ - Percy Bysshe Shelley
3. Roaring fires
On a chilly, misty autumnal day, there’s nothing nicer than a roaring fire for that quintessential country-house experience. Everyday the Library and Drawing Room at Goldsborough, fires are lit allowing you to get cosy and warm after your long walk in the countryside. This season creates the perfect setting for a sense of comfort, warmth and reflection.
4. Autumn food
Perhaps the highlight of the foodie calendar is autumn harvest. It brings an abundance of delicious flavours including squash & pumpkins, mushrooms, apples, blackberries and quince. Here at the Hall our award-winning chefs create dishes to make use of these super fresh ingredients which have come straight from the kitchen garden. Take a wander down to see for yourself the amazing glasshouse and all the produce in the veg garden and orchard.
5. Autumn accommodation
What do we look for in an autumn break? Cosy rooms with snuggly beds and beautiful views… lazy afternoons by the fire playing board games followed by delightful food from a seasonal, local menu. It’s all here at Goldsborough Hall. You’ve got glorious autumn colour right outside the front door, and after a chilly walk, sit in the oak-panelled Library with a crackling log fire to warm up. Top the night off with a sensational 3AA rosette tasting menu. Autumn perfection!
‘Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall’ - F Scott Fitzgerald
6. Autumn weather
Think misty mornings, followed by faded sunshine and crisp afternoons. Even grey days can seem alive with the backdrop of autumnal hues. Autumn is the cooling off month between blazing summer and chilling winter. When the cooler temperatures start rolling in, get out the jackets, coats, boots, scarves and hats in preparation for the change in season.
