Environmental Policy

At Goldsborough Hall, we have been working behind the scenes for a number of years to reduce our environmental impact and to keep Yorkshire beautiful. We are proud to be a family business and are passionate about making sure this beautiful place is here to enjoy for generations to come. Here are a few of the actions we are taking to help protect our environment and promote sustainability.

Energy and energy conservation
We use carbon neutral biomass boilers to heat the Hall combined with in-room temperature sensors to control heating, this ensures maximum efficiency. Biomass is a renewable energy source, generated from burning wood pellets from renewal sources releasing only the reduced CO2 that was captured for this purpose and considerably less than fossil fuels. The Biomass system provides all hot water and central heating for the estate.

Water conservation
In order to conserve and reduce water usage, guests are encouraged not to change their towels after only one use. There is a card in each room with our eco message on towel reuse. We have installed a borehole so that we are using only water stored beneath the estate to irrigate the garden, this water is high in minerals that are beneficial to plant growth and naturally replenished every winter as a giant storage tank.

Recycling and waste reduction
Along with most domestic homes, the Hall has a robust recycling programs for newspapers, cardboard, glass and plastic along with a food waste composting programme. Efforts to reduce single use plastic include the introduction of paper straws, wooden cocktail stirrers and glass water bottle containers.

Room key
Our room keys are traditional metal keys with large brass fobs rather than the modern plastic key cards - better for the environment and equally as durable as plastic.

Cleaning products
Recognising the importance of safer products for guests and employees as well as the environment, many hotels have moved to cleaning products that are made with bio-based oils and other natural cleaners. By making the switch, they are reducing the use of products with chlorine bleach and petrochemical derivatives. These more natural products have proven performance, are less irritating to guests and employees, and less destructive to the environment.

Food preparation - local and home grown
Local products, fresh, seasonal produce, and other ingredients are emerging as a significant focus of hotel food and beverage programmes. A shift to more sustainably sourced and healthier cuisine offers travellers unique opportunities to experience a greater connection to the locations they are visiting. At Goldsborough Hall, we have a very large kitchen garden and huge glasshouse where many of our vegetables and herbs are grown from seed. We prefer our food miles in feet and inches!

Lighting
We use LED bulbs and sensor-based lights in communal areas to help reduce lighting pollution and wasted energy.

Local employment
Many of our staff are from the local area which helps to reduce travelling and keeps local employment.
